\"\"<\/a>[ENGLISH] Saving The House Where Superman Was Born –<\/strong> Brad Meltzer –\u00a0via\u00a0Ordinary People\u00a0Change The World<\/a> – says:<\/strong> \u00ab\u00a0For the past two years, while researching Jerry Siegel’s life for my new novel, I asked my friend Mike San Giacomo to take me to the actual house in Cleveland where Superman was created.\u00a0I wanted to see the exact spot where young Jerry Siegel sat in his bed on that rainy summer night… where a seventeen(!)\u00a0year old kid stared\u00a0at his bedroom ceiling and gave birth to the idea\u00a0of Superman.<\/p>\n

And so we went.\u00a0 (You can read that whole adventure here<\/a>).<\/p>\n

But the one thing I quickly realized was that this house was in…well…it was in bad shape.<\/p>\n

The house where Google was created is saved.\u00a0 The farm where Hewlett Packard was founded is preserved.\u00a0 And Richard Nixon\u2019s house is a museum.\u00a0 But the house where Superman \u2014 one of the world\u2019s most recognized heroes \u2014 was created?\u00a0 It\u2019s a wreck.\u00a0 It’s actually a great old house — painted bright red and blue (really) — and owned by one of the kindest elderly couples in the world.\u00a0 But as the neighborhood sank, so did the house.\u00a0 When you walk inside, you feel like your foot might go through the floor.\u00a0 The roof is flawed.\u00a0 The paint is a mess.\u00a0 When you look up at the ceiling, you see the exposed rafters overhead.\u00a0 It’s a mess.\u00a0 Worst of all, the city of Cleveland let it happen.\u00a0 As the owner told me, \u201cThey won\u2019t even give us a plaque.\u00a0 Not even a plaque to say, \u2018This is where Superman was created.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Exactly.<\/p>\n

Just heartbreaking.<\/p>\n

And that\u2019s why Mike and I started calling our friends.\u00a0 He called the city of Glenville.\u00a0 I called my fellow comic book writers and artists.\u00a0 Then I called Jerry Siegel\u2019s wife and daughter, Joanne and Laura, who came on as our honorary chairpeople.\u00a0 One thing became clear:\u00a0 if we don’t save this place soon, the house will soon go the way of Superman artist Joe Shuster’s, which was torn down.<\/p>\n

Soon after, thanks to the hard work of many, The Siegel & Shuster Society was born.<\/p>\n

With a name like that, peole keep asking me, \u201cIs that the secret superhero clubhouse?\u201d\u00a0 You better believe it\u2019s the secret superhero clubhouse.<\/p>\n

And this charitable 501(c)(3) is dedicated to making sure the Siegel House will be saved, and restored, and there so you can take your kids one day.<\/p>\n

Will we succeed?\u00a0 That depends on you.\u00a0 Really.\u00a0 You.\u00a0 If we want to repair the exterior, and fix the roof, and clear out the rotted wood, we have to raise the cash.\u00a0 Cleveland won\u2019t pay.\u00a0 The big corporations won\u2019t pay.\u00a0 They\u2019re the ones who ignored it.\u00a0 But like the site says, I believe ordinary people change the world.\u00a0 I believe that we \u2014 the true fans \u2014 can do what Cleveland and everyone else couldn\u2019t<\/p>\n
