Frank Miller revient \u00e0 l’univers spartiate de 300 en s’int\u00e9ressant cette fois \u00e0 Xerxes et \u00e0 Alexandre le Grand. Hollywood, entretemps, n’a pas pris le temps d’attendre pour donner une suite au film de Zack Snyder (le \u00ab\u00a0Rise of an Empire\u00a0\u00bb de sinistre m\u00e9moire). Si bien que le projet de Miller d’extension de la BD d’origine a longtemps semblait… repouss\u00e9 aux calendes grecques. Mais le voici, qui s’ouvre \u00e0 nouveau par des compositions bien particuli\u00e8res du ma\u00eetre.<\/p>\n

Si vous gardez de Frank Miller l’image des back-ups et de certaines couvertures du r\u00e9cent Dark Knight III, avec des r\u00e9sultats in\u00e9gaux, replonger dans le monde de 300 demande un moment d’acclimatation dans le sens o\u00f9 il s’agit d’un exercice enti\u00e8rement diff\u00e9rent. Parce que, depuis les ann\u00e9es 80, Miller s’est gard\u00e9 de redevenir un \u00ab\u00a0monthly artist\u00a0\u00bb et qu’il a souvent marqu\u00e9 des poses entre les projets, il est tentant de juger de chaque nouvelle livraison comme un curseur chronologique de l’\u00e9volution de l’artiste, en oubliant un peu vite que le premier concern\u00e9 ne consid\u00e8re pas de la m\u00eame mani\u00e8re les diff\u00e9rentes ambiances. 300 n’est pas Sin City qui n’est pas Dark Knight et inversement. Voil\u00e0 pourquoi au moment de se lancer dans la lecture de Xerxes – The Fall of the House of Darius and the Rise of Alexander il faut se replonger dans la lecture de 300 et y trouver ici une forme de continuit\u00e9 visuelle, quand bien m\u00eame le trait est peut-\u00eatre moins brutal que dans la premi\u00e8re \u0153uvre. 300 et Xerxes se d\u00e9marquent en effet du comic-book habituel par un sens de la chor\u00e9graphie, d’une disposition qui empreinte aux anciennes mosa\u00efques et poteries grecques… tout en gardant une fonction volontaire de caricature volontaire, un tantinet cartoon. Les jambes des Spartes sont lourdes, leurs silhouettes trapues formant comme une texture qui vient tapisser la page. C’est la composition qui l’emporte sur le trait. Pris s\u00e9par\u00e9ment, les silhouettes d’Aeskylos, Darius, Miltiades et des autres peuvent paraitre vite exp\u00e9di\u00e9es. Typiquement, pour son apparition \u00e0 cheval, Miltiades a l’air d’un pantin, avec les traits de son visage inachev\u00e9s. C’est \u00e0 dire qu’il faut lire Xerxes comme on regarder du th\u00e9\u00e2tre d’ombres, avec une grille de lecture bien particuli\u00e8re.<\/p>\n

Pour ce premier num\u00e9ro, Frank Miller s’attaque ni plus ni moins \u00e0 la bataille de Marathon, se concentrant surtout sur quelques personnages qui vont animer la nouvelle saga. Comme \u00e0 son habitude, Miller est d\u00e9fiant de l’autorit\u00e9 et des hi\u00e9rarchies. Ici le grad\u00e9 est maquill\u00e9 pour la parade, fait le beau et tandis que les hommes sous ses ordres font le sale boulot. Pourtant m\u00eame Miltiades (quand m\u00eame assez \u00e9loign\u00e9 de sa repr\u00e9sentation classique) tient son r\u00f4le et motive les troupes pour la victoire. Tous sont se battent pour \u00e9tablir la nouvelle d\u00e9mocratie, principe qui, au long du projet pourrait bien servir \u00e0 Miller pour \u00e9mettre quelques commentaires de son cru. A ce stade, ce premier \u00e9pisode est surtout une mise en bouche et une sorte de d\u00e9claration d’intention.
